Description:
Sandnes was founded as a trading centre for Jæren and, therefore, the town’s interactions with the water as an amenity were very limited. But the decline of activity in the old industrial and harbour areas gives the town a unique opportunity to establish a more intimate interface with the water.
The masterplan represents a development strategy which, over time, will secure a whole host of amenities in these extensive areas which are being freed up at the heart of the old town. The district will be divided into three parts: a small part dedicated for businesses, a larger part for housing and the largest part for civic functions including a green island complete with theatre, school and sports areas.
Alongside the island a marina will be constructed and, skirting it, a green pedestrian street for soft road users. With a new multi-storey car park land is freed up for the development of attractive new urban spaces along the water’s edge.
