Description:

In conjunction with the redevelopment of the site of Oslo’s old airport, Fornebu, the city’s industrial oil port is to be converted into a new commercial and residential area called Rolfsbukta.

The overarching strategy for the masterplan is to invest the area with a coherent architectonic identity. The chief element is a promenade that provides a physical link between the two sides of the bay and which on the visual dimension creates a connection between the activities and the pulse of the new neighbourhood including a plaza, an outdoor stage at the innermost point of the bay, dwellings and retail lining the promenade, a seafront park, water sports activities, and the Oslo Fjord itself, where the promenade ends.

The western side of the promenade is the site of six parallel residential and office blocks which with their crisp contemporary architectural style and rhythmic spacing underscore the continuity of the promenade – a feature further enhanced by the green spaces between the blocks, which deliver a conduit between the park and the water across the promenade. To the west, the new development and promenade terminate with the ferry terminal, restaurants, a yachting club and a bathing beach.
