Global Compact/

schmidt hammer lassen architects is a member of the UN initiative Global Compact.

Global Compact is a network of more than 5200 companies and other stakeholders from over 130 countries, who are dedicated to promote sustainable development and corporate citizenship. Global Compact was founded in 2000 under the UN leadership of Kofi Annan. Serveral large companies in the building industry have been members for some years now – e.i. Arup, Rambøll and COWI.

18 of the largest Danish architectural companies joined Global Compact in 2008 on recommendation from DANSKE ARK and Danish Architecture Centre, who at that time was hosting the exhibition “Building Sustainable Communities”.

As a member of Global Compact we are committed to incorporate ten principles into the way we behave – within our company, towards our clients and in the surrounding society. The ten principles stems from the Declaration of Human Rights, Labour Rights, Environmental Rights and Responsibilities and Anti-Corruption Measures.

Our enrollment means that we will publicly embrace, support and enact initiatives within our sphere of influence. Most importantly, we are as a company obliged to comply with the principles and continuously improve our own performance. Secondly we will strive to advocate the principles through cooperation and dialogue regardless of geography, religion and politics.

The ten principles

Human Rights

Principle 1: Businesses should support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights; and

Principle 2: businesses should make sure that they are not complicit in human rights abuses.

Labour Standards

Principle 3: Businesses should uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining;

Principle 4: the elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labour;

Principle 5: the effective abolition of child labour;

Principle 6: the elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation.

Environment

Principle 7: Businesses should support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges;

Principle 8: undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility, and;

Principle 9: encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies.

Anti-Corruption

Principle 10: Businesses should work against corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery.

We are now building the foundation for implementing the programme to ensure that we address this agenda proactively and systematically in order to ensure that we contribute to develop our involvement for our company and the industry as a whole.
