Description:

The Clarion Hotell Royal Christiania is situated in the centre of Oslo city and has a capacity that warrants the hotel to be known by both business people and tourists. By adding a tall tower to the existing building, the hotel will appear as modern and international, and the whole hotel complex becomes a landmark that can be seen from many places in Oslo.

The tower is designed as a contrast to the existing main building with an architectural expression that is light and welcoming. With rounded corners, which is a known expression from other buildings in this area in Oslo, the building becomes a part of the Scandinavian architectural tradition. The expression of the new extension emphasises the character of the existing building and creates a beautiful and equal composition between the old and the new.

In the ground floor level the building offers a visual connection from the double height bar and café area to passers-by in the street. The sky bar, which is accessible from the lobby, is marked in the façade by a change in the row of windows.

The building is designed as a unique sustainable extension to the existing hotel that minimises the use of energy. The ambition is to create a hotel that offers the best comfort possible and the best indoor climate possible, while lowering the level of energy consumption as much as possible. It has not only been a matter of choosing energy efficient technical solutions but rather a question of viewing the building and its architectural design holistically as having its own energy system. The level of comfort and the use of energy in the building is a result of an integrated design process where the local climate in Oslo – including the sun, the wind and the temperature – has had an impact on the final design.
