Description:
Hotel Tjuvholmen consists of two elements: a block arrangement containing apartments counterpointed by a visually challenging volume containing the hotel function.
The residential component is aligned with the town’s rectangular street grid, while the hotel acts as a catalyst, opening up onto the surrounding quay promenade and the water. Within the same idiom, the two main volumes are adapted to their particular locations: the urban space and the dock, respectively.
Defined by the hotel arrival area, the elements of the building spread out like fingers on a hand, the concave forms both embracing the surroundings and opening the inter-building spaces up towards the view. A further feature: the vertical corbels and façade articulation take their inspiration from rock formations, providing a counterpoint to the traditional built fabric of the city.
There is space beneath the building at the western end of the quay promenade as well as at the southern canal side edge to accommodate cafés, restaurants and sitting areas complete with seating steps. The building and the promenade form a cohesive whole, investing the interface between the docks and the canal with drama and character. The new hotel functions as an icon and a landmark for an area of the city currently under development.
