Description:

schmidt hammer lassen architects was commissioned in 2006 by the Danish National Museum to be in charge of a new setup for the permanent exhibition of its Prehistoric Collection.

The collection is the flagship of the museum and takes the visitor on a voyage of 14,000 years of Danish prehistory, from the reindeer-hunters of the Ice Age to the voyages of the Vikings. The exhibition includes unique archaeological treasures like the Trundholm Chariot of the Sun, the Egtved girl’s grave, the Gundestrup cauldron, the Hoby tomb and much more.

The exhibition is based on the latest scientific results; new discoveries have appeared, and today focus is on other questions than earlier. Half of the approximately 12.000 objects that the National Museum displays now are new compared to the old exhibition.

schmidt hammer lassen architects have given the collection a whole new body and face which relate to the latest developments in interactivity between material and user, and multimedia and dynamic communication on multiple levels.

The new exhibition was inaugurated in May 2008.
