Description:
The Blue Planet is located at Copenhagen’s key entry point by road, sea and air, and it will be one of the largest aquaria in Northern Europe.
The builing is designed as an organic shape, inspired by a magnified water droplet.
The basic plan follows a figure eight floor plan with a large vertical volume containing the central atrium. The atrium is flanked by two horizontal volumes housing aquaria for cold water and tropical sea life, respectively. Accessed via the main entrance stairway, the atrium is designed as a central square with direct and dramatic views out to sea. This area is the starting point from which the visitor embarks on a sequence of spatial experiences offering the visitor lots of stimulus and surprise.
Clad in glass, The Blue Planet Aquarium is designed to offer an experience of the changing Nordic light which gives the building a variable expression further stressed by reflection from the sky and the water. A range of volumes relate specifically to the exhibits, culminating in the vast ocean aquarium accessed via a tunnel that leads visitors underneath the fantastic aquarium. The design deliberately heightens the sense of a 3-D effect where the visitor appears to be totally surrounded by the sealife on view.
The 9,000 square metres large aquarium is also designed to be highly sustainable. Solar and photovoltaic panels on the roof, heat pumps and harnessed wave energy will generate sufficient electricity to make the core aquarium areas self-sufficient.
