Description:
The extension of the Rudolf Steiner School in Aarhus, Denmark has resulted in an outstanding, sculptural building that embraces the philosophy and traditions of the Waldorf education.
The exterior expression of the building appears dynamically angled and covered with calm black wood and luminous windows. The oblique angles serve as a fundamental idea for the whole building and make it intimate and personal. The open and sharp angles of the façade facing the playground accommodate social activities and playing. In this way, the façade creates natural cosy nooks, and the gently sloping roof with its large Swiss eaves and rough wooden beams reinforce the impression of privacy.
The interior design of the building is polygonal thus the classrooms are pentagonal or hexagonal, creating spaces without square or sharp inward corners. Instead, the angles are open and embracing in order to provide a warm atmosphere and a sense of belonging. The new facilities are designed for the kindergarten class and the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade.
The ten new class rooms are all different from each other hence manifold colours, sizes and forms vary. The spaciousness of the first floor has been additionally enhanced by adding the oblique roof, and the variety of angles provides views of the sea, woods and schoolyard.
The building was semi-manufactured in Germany and assembled on site. The whole process took only five months.
