Description:

The proposal includes a new School of Architecture and Construction, combined with a new University Learning Resource Centre and new public space for the residents and visitors of maritime Greenwich.

The site sits within the boundary of the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site and the West Greenwich Conservation area. The site bridges the intersection between Greenwich Park and its historical Maritime buildings, the vibrancy of Greenwich Town Centre and the leafy residential neighbourhood south west of the site.

The proposal creates a highly functional, flexible and adaptable series of interlocking internal spaces with an external articulation which is based on a design approach that is driven towards the sensitive planning and construction of the building.

The building form is a composition of four main building elements of varying sizes with an atrium space in the middle. Each of the four elements is generated through the repetition of a 7.5 m x 7.5 m structural grid. The elements have a varied, stepped roofline, and the heights vary according to the site context. The connecting atrium offsets the various angles of each block.

The idea is that the structural grid provides a flexible planning framework for educational space. Voids for vertical connections, light wells and internal gardens can be cut into the three-dimensional grid as required. Conceived as a three dimensional composition of hollow cubes, the planted roofs of the buildings become an undulating landscape within themselves.

The internal atmosphere is like a creative warehouse; rugged finishes are contrasted with timber, curtains, soft furniture and greenery.
