Description:

The National Academy of Arts in Bergen is designed as a three-storey volume floating above its base. An enclosing circular shell broken by four large glazed openings holds the storeys together.

The complex is accessed via two arrival ramps that anchor it to the landscape. These ramps take the visitors up between the building and the large trees, where there are views of the mountains, and at which point the ramp takes a sharp 180-degree turn.

The lowest storey contains the academy’s workshops. Floating on the workshop floor plate is the indoor square, and it is the locus of contact between the institution and the community. The teaching rooms are located adjacent to the square alongside small units such as studios, project and seminar rooms, study workstations, staff workspaces and breakout areas. Visual connections between the floors are provided by the carved openings towards the skylights by which the whole roof functions as one vast window opening out to the light.

The façade of Corten steel Serves as a climate buffer and features large and small apertures in a system of triangular forms responsive to light changes.
