Description:

The kindergarden is part of an ensemble of buildings which comprises two freestanding tower blocks, a centre complex and the kindergarten itself. The building is conceived in a crisp and simple architectural idiom, adapted to the sloping ground – not intruding into the landscape but nestling against the mountainous structures.

The southwest-facing façade is glazed, incorporating operable and closed panels, and featuring larch mouldings – a design intended to elicit associations with animals from the Arctic regions. The façade thus appears as one large window looking out towards the town. The remainder of the exterior clad in timber incorporates tiles on three sides, and features window and door apertures in aluminium.

The kindergarden comprises two storeys and incorporates a large communal space that spans two levels and extends throughout the building. A concrete wall perforated with a diversity of interstices – windows and glass stones – that look into the individual group rooms and bounds the communal space. Via the roof and roof lights, natural light streams down to the large central communal space and further on down to the lower communal space via slits in the plate. Wooden terraces are constructed outside, connecting with each of the group rooms and offset from each other on the sloping ground.
