Description:

Vaerkmestergaarden is a new office building in Aarhus, Denmark. The project is situated in the centre of Aarhus among the listed Danish State Railway’s central engineering workshops which are now, among other things, occupied by the fitness facility the DGI Building. Opposite to Vaerkmestergaarden are the KPMG high-rise and the shopping mall Bruun’s Gallery. All these surrounding projects are likewise designed by schmidt hammer lassen architects.

Vaerkmestergaarden office building is cubic in form and consists of six prominent white concrete decks and a seventh floor under the ground which function as basement parking. The glass façades are fitted with external sun screens, and the decks create large overhanging eaves that are covered vertically in light marble. The deep window elements are covered with golden Tombak – metal which is an alloy of brass and zinc.

Inside, an atrium cuts through the building culminating in a skylight roof providing daylight to open office spaces via balconies surrounding the atrium on all floors. The large glass façades provide panoramic views of Aarhus, and further views can be experienced from an open roof terrace at the top of the building. The appearance of Vaerkmestergaarden is intended to be bright and fresh complementing the predominantly light green and black-brown colours of the surrounding buildings.
