Description:

The Hamburg skyline is dominated by the two listed buildings, the Spiegel high-rise and the IBM high-rise, both of which were designed by the Hamburg architect Werner Kallmorgen. Three new buildings are planned to fill out the gaps between the high-rises on the so-called Spiegel Island site. The composition of the three new buildings is laid out in appreciation of the urban planning principles of Kallmorgen.

The first building called The Spiegel Arcades has seven stories and is intended for office and retail purposes, subordinating itself to the dominant Spiegel building by a retracted cut in the western façade. Thus, the new building repeats the transposed rectangular plan of the Spiegel Building. The Spiegel Arcades is connected to the Spiegel Building by a glass-covered bridge at the second top level. On the Spiegel Island an existing pavilion of function rooms and a canteen with interior design by Verner Panton will be removed. To preserve the Panton interior, the canteen will be reinstalled in the glass bridge where the colourful design will be visible from the street.

The second volume Oasis has two rectangular parallel bases in two levels with a green courtyard separating them. Situated in the pedestrian area between the two metro stations Messberg and Dovenfleet, the bases have optimal conditions for having cafés and retail shopping. Two six-storey apartment blocks rest on top of the bases. The apartment balconies are in direct contact with the green, enclosed courtyard, which is sheltered from traffic noise by glass walls in both ends.

The third volume is a slender six-storey building which is topped off by a horizontally cantilevering building forming a T. The building is called Wolkenbügel which is loosely translated to “Cloud Cradle”. It is situated adjacent to the IBM Building in the part of the Spiegel Island, which in terms of urban planning is more sensitive. The building is intended for exclusive open office spaces on two levels with views to Speicherstadt, Hafencity and the city centre. As an antithesis to the IBM Building the Wolkenbügel communicates with the neighbouring buildings and creates a gate towards the Willy Brandt Street.

The proportions and layout of Kallmorgen’s façades are identified in a new interpretation with the façades of the three volumes referring to the strict punch card grid of the IBM Building.
